Coto de Caza is a 5,000-acre guard-gated master-planned community set in the Trabuco Canyon foothills, and it is one of the oldest planned communities in south Orange County — established in 1968 originally as a private hunting reserve. The Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club, with two 18-hole championship golf courses (the North Course by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and the South by Pete Dye), 12 tennis courts, an equestrian center with more than 250 boarded horses, and a fitness and swim complex, anchors resident life. The Lodge at Coto — the original hunting lodge — sits inside the club campus and is the marquee wedding and gala venue. Vista Del Verde, the main spine road, connects Oso Parkway at the north gate through the community to the south gate on Coto de Caza Drive. Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park at the southern edge opens 545 acres of oak and coastal-sage canyon with trailheads directly off the community, and O'Neill Regional Park extends the trail system north. Wagon Wheel Canyon and Sycamore Canyon add more single-track. Coto has no through-traffic and no public transit — every guest arrives through the gate on Vista Del Verde or the Coto de Caza Drive south entrance.
